Amazon.com Product Description The Fiskars transplanting spade features all-steel construction for heavy-duty strength and durability. The blade features an oversized step for additional leverage and comfort, and is pre-sharpened to cut through the ground easier. The teardrop-shaped shaft and oversized D-handle provide ergonomic comfort and control during use. For added strength, the blade itself is directly welded onto the shaft, and the entire shovel is powder-coated to prevent rust and clean up easily. The low-profile spade head is perfect for digging planting holes or other precise tasks.

Fiskars 9654 Transplanting Spade May 25, 2010 JC Best shovel so far that I have come across. We break several tree spades each spring when we work on our tree plantations and the Fiskar has been the longest lasting. Its worth the extra money compared to the cheaper ones sold at home depot and menards. Only thing that I would recommended for improvement is where the post and the shovel meet the spot welds could be reinforced to add more strength. I had to do it myself due to them coming apart after severe usage. I see the most stress in that area especailly if the soil is dry.
worth every penny May 14, 2010 Farmers Browns Dgther (Long Island, NY) It is everything that was represented. I am an avid gardener (weekend warrior)with difficult knees. This shovel goes deep quickly so it is less effort when moving an item, digging a hole etc. I would buy and give as gift to other "yard warriors".
Great quality shovel May 5, 2010 Goosecat (Vancouver, WA) The entire shovel except for the handle is steel so it has great integrity with no flex. It has a nice heft which helps cut into hard or clay soil. I used it to dig a shallow, narrow trench to place edging stones and it worked great.
Best multi-purpose gardening shovel December 4, 2009 M. Larson (Virginia) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
Don't let the name of the tool fool you, a transplanting shovel/spade does more than just transplant. It has a variety of invaluable gardening uses, but works particularly well for digging planting holes in an existing garden bed, when adding new plants in narrow spots. The blade is narrow and long enough to dig the right sized hole without greatly disturbing surrounding established plants, and also works great on the jobs for which it was named -- transplanting. It can get in and around the root ball and deep enough to get it all so that the plant is easy to lift out of the ground in one piece, again without disturbing surrounding plants. The little "step" at the top of the blade is especially helpful, to get more leverage and dig deeper. I wouldn't recommend getting one of these types of tools without the step.
This is my #1 go-to digging shovel, used more than any other long-handled digging tool I own. I'm not sure how one brand (Fiskars) versus another (Ames, Smith & Hawken, etc.) compares -- I've owned several different makes and all seem to do the job quite well. Since I'm hard on gardening tools, (I wore out the last one -- neglectful gardener left it out in the elements), I'm about to order this one, and the Fiskars version seems as good as any, (I like their cutting tools), although there are other (more expensive) choices available which may or may not be better. I'd be curious to hear if other reviewers have a different preferred manufacturer of this particular type of tool, and if so, why.
After I order, receive and use this Fiskars transplanting spade, I will come back and update my review again to confirm whether it meets my needs and expectations for this type of tool.
Best Shovel Ever! September 2, 2008 Richard J. Beamish (Blacksburg, VA) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Buy the shovel! It's worth every penny and if you don't like the shovel send me a nasty email!
It's also great to use as just as a regular ol' shovel.
